It goes without saying that there are a lot of websites out there. Some are good, some are bad. Most fall in between somewhere. And while mastering at least competent design isn’t all that hard, fine tuning it can be difficult. You see, there are some things that site owners tend to get wrong when building a website across all industries. That’s why we’ve put together the following three tips that should make improving your site’s web design a little bit easier.
Make it Consistent
All of your site’s pages don’t have to look identical but they do need to look like they all belong on the same website. Time and time again we run into sites without a clear or consistent theme or focus. The home page will feature bold photography and the rest of the pages are cold and clinical. Or, every page looks like it belongs on a different site. We think a lot of people end up with sites like this because they’re trying to be artsy and really creative. And you know what? We like that. Creativity is a good thing. But it needs to be focused. Reining in your ideas will ensure your site looks good as a whole and is suitable to be experienced as a user clicks through from the home page to internal site links.
A good way to ensure this happens is to get a professional on the job. You’ll sit down and discuss what you want out of your site and what you want it to look like. Then a designer can take it from there. This way, you can be certain that every element of your site is there for a reason and sticks to the main theme.
Meet Your Audience’s Needs
There is sort of an inherent danger in online publishing. That danger is called immediacy. While it’s great to be able to write something up and have it published immediately, this means it can go live without being polished or even focused. It means a lot of people fail to give the content that appears on their sites any thought. And focus is everything. Truly, you need make sure everything that appears on your site appeals directly to your target market. Otherwise, it’ll fly right past them and you’ll have wasted your time in its creation. Instead of throwing any old thing up on your website, spend some time actually thinking about whether or not your latest idea will appeal to those you’re targeting with your product or service. A good way to think of it is in terms of problems and solutions. Figure out what problems your target customers have then make sure your site’s design and content offers solutions to those problems.
Make Your Content Work For You
While not necessarily a part of your site’s web design, the content that appears on it directly impacts the user’s experience. For instance, too much content on the homepage can be overwhelming and make it difficult for visitors to know where to look or focus. Basically, it can make your site look cluttered and that’s really off-putting, especially to those who are in a hurry and need to find information quickly. What’s more, too much content and not enough focus makes it really hard for new visitors to figure out where your call-to-action is. This is bad. You don’t want to make people have to search for a CTA! It should leap right out at them. The key to preventing this is to prioritize what will appear on your homepage. You don’t need to include every little detail about your company and what it is you do. A simple list, even, will suffice to keep visitors moving through your site and hopefully into your sales funnel.
The old adage, “less is more,” definitely applies here. You want to make your site easy to navigate and the content on it informative, but you definitely don’t want to overwhelm your visitors with too much of it.
By following these three tips, you should see an improvement in your site’s overall design and in user engagement. Best of luck!
